On September 19, 2022, the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit charged 24-year-old Kevin Shorter, of Georgetown, with Murder in the First Degree in the beating death of Paul McCarter of Georgetown,
Shorter was arraigned on the upgraded charge at Justice of the Peace Court #2. Shorter, who was held on a $1,060,000 cash bond, remains in the custody of the Department of Correction at Sussex Correctional Institution.
On September 7, 2022, at approximately 9:53 p.m., Georgetown Police Department responded to the Royal Farms, located at 20579 DuPont Boulevard, in reference to an assault complaint. The investigation revealed that the victim, 38-year-old Paul McCarter of Georgetown, was assaulted with a baseball bat inside the convenience store. McCarter, who sustained severe injuries, died from those injuries on September 13, 2022. Shorter was initially arrested for attempted murder and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on September 10, 2022.
The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit assumed this investigation at the request of the Georgetown Police Department.
