DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) — Delaware’s attorney general says a former police officer has pleaded guilty to assaulting an injured man and lying about it.

The attorney general’s office said Wednesday that former Dewey Beach officer Gregory Lynch Jr. has pleaded guilty to second-degree perjury and third-degree assault. Authorities say the attack happened in 2019 when Lynch was dispatched to help an injured man. When the man said he didn’t want to be hospitalized, prosecutors say, Lynch beat him, later claiming the man committed offensive touching of an officer. Prosecutors say medics and fellow officers came forward with the truth.

Lynch will serve one year of probation. He’s banned from serving as an officer.
