Rally to keep confederate general marker on courthouse grounds set for Saturday

One local man wants to keep the marker for Confederate General John Winder

in front of the old county courthouse after a petition was started to remove it and now has rally planned for Saturday.

Jonathan Taylor,  the owner of the blog Lower Eastern Shore News said  there is also an online petition asking the Wicomico County Council to keep the marker in place. Taylor said he was motivated to do something after a local chapter of Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ) started a a petition and held a rally to get the marker relocated.

The SURJ petition says that having a marker honoring a Confederate general on those grounds is inappropriate considering less than a hundred feet away is the location where the last lynching occurred in Salisbury. It's also just feet away from the old Byrd tavern, which was used as a holding pen for slaves before they were sold.

Taylor says the marker isn't a sign of racism, it's just a piece of history that should be honored and left where it is.

"This is not hate to me this is just part of history, this doesn't make anybody read this and decide that they're going to be racist or something. It's just telling people about a guy from the area that was a general in the civil war," Taylor said.

The rally is set for Saturday from 1 to 5 pm outside the circuit courthouse.
