Seaford School District prepares for referendum

SEAFORD, Del. – Educators at the Seaford School District are doing everything they can to see their upcoming referendum get passed.

Seaford School District Superintendent Dr. Corey Miklus says this comes after years of cutting budgets.

“Some of our programs were cut across the district,” said Miklus, “We had to take a look at staffing and internal budgets continue to be cut.  Whether it be buildings and grounds, instruction, technology and just like at home, costs are rising.  When you’re cutting a budget 20 to 25 percent you’re obviously not going to be buying things that you typically bought for your classroom, which was for the students where it could be supples,” said Gigi Hastings, special education coordinator at the Seaford School District.

So, educators say they are looking to get 900,000 dollars that will allow them to fix up part of Central Elementary School’s roof, hire more staff, upgrade technology and more.  They say without these changes they would have to cut down.

“There would be staff cuts, we’d have to take a look at all of our programs,” said Miklus.  The superintendent adds that without the funding it would be harder to get more things like textbooks and supplies as well as to keep programs going in the future.  “Last year, we had a 20 percent cut across just about all our budgets in our district and that ranges from athletics,” said Miklus.  “When you think about that, you’re looking at taking areas such as football where we have to make sure our helmets are in compliance, uniforms,” said Miklus.

As for what impact this would have on taxpayers the superintendent says, “We will be increasing our operating expense tax to 72 cents, but the impact under taxpayers would be 67 cents because of decreases in some of the district’s matched taxes.”  But, it is money educators say is well worth the investment for the future of their students moving forward.  “We’re just a point where we can’t make any more cuts,” said Miklus.

School officials say they will be hosting their next meeting on the referendum on February 10 at Seaford Senior High School. They are encouraging everyone in the community to attend. For more information about the referendum, click here.

The referendum is scheduled for March 4 at Seaford Senior High School between 7 AM and 8 PM.
