A serious crash involving a car and a school bus north of Milton left one man in critical condition.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of northbound Coastal Highway and Reynolds Road.

According to Delaware State Police, a 26-year-old Milton man driving a 2010 Chrysler Sebring was traveling north on Route 1. At the same time, a 73-year-old Milford man operating a 2017 Blue Bird school bus was stopped in the median intersection waiting to turn northbound on Route 1. Police do not yet know the reason, but the car jumped over the grassy median, spinning, and struck the right side of the bus. The car slid under the bus before stopping.

Police said the man was trapped under the bus until Milford firefighters could free him. He was first transferred to Beebe Healthcare before being relocated to Christiana Medical Center, where he was admitted in critical condition.

The students on board were from Mariner Middle School, police said. According to the Cape Henlopen School District, two students on the bus were checked by paramedics and released to their parents. The second child later visited Bayhealth Milford Memorial and was treated for an undetermined injury. The bus driver was also checked by paramedics but was found uninjured in the crash.

Route 1 was closed in both directions for nearly two and a half hours as state police investigated the crash.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident; they said alcohol and drug impairment to not appear to be a factor and no charges have been filed.
